Headstone Maintenance: Preserve and Sustain its Beauty

Headstones are some of the most important objects to keep the memory of our loved ones and have a significant role in the deceased’s family. Headstones come with a lot of meaningful stories behind them and are what makes the headstones so remarkable and special. But due to the passage of time, there is an urgent need for preservation and maintenance, taking care of each headstone.

Like what we do with our homes, headstones should be properly maintained to extend their quality. It is an investment and it must be preserved well as it represents the memorial of our departed loved one. Scheduling for headstone maintenance is your next step once your gravestone is finally installed.

As a caretaker of your loved ones resting place, you also need to know that cleaning requires adequate techniques along with the right tools. Placing your headstone in a clean and dry environment will keep it from being damaged.  Regular upkeep will prevent your headstone from deteriorating at a faster rate due to outside factors and give you more time before you need to think about its replacement or repairs.

The cemeteries in Slovenia are overall well kept as is the last home of our loved ones who pass away. It is the last resting place for them, free from problems and noise, and a place for them to be at peace. It is, without a doubt, a lovely spot where our loved one’s memory will be preserved.

Who is responsible for the gravesite?

A cemetery is a place where funerals and burials take place. It is made up of headstones, which usually have an inscription that tells the person’s name, date of birth, and date of death; footstones or other markers to identify those buried together in one plot; and a burial mound or other monuments that mark each grave. The headstone may also include references to religious affiliations, family relationships, etc.

Because many cemeteries are not maintained by any one entity over a long period of time, gravesites must be regularly restored to assure future generations will know where their loved ones lay at rest.

Depending on the cemetery, it may be owned by the city hall, the church, or a private organization, but in either case, they are responsible for maintaining and repairing the site, but not the headstones.

Traditionally cemetery management only involves the allocation of land for burial, the digging and filling of graves, and the maintenance of the grounds and landscaping. The construction and maintenance of headstones and other grave monuments are usually the private responsibility of the families of the deceased.

The owners of these monuments have to make sure that the graves are maintained and that they are properly cared for.

What is headstone maintenance?

Headstone maintenance is a way to improve and preserve the monument in your loved one’s honor. Doing this will help it to last for years to come. Many different types of headstone care can be done. Some popular forms are:
– Cleaning a headstone
– Cleaning up moss
– Preserving the surrounding of the headstone
– Restoring the stone
And etc.

Despite what we may think, protecting our loved one’s monuments with these simple tasks can be very beneficial.

Removing moss is an easy way to protect our loved one’s memorial site from being damaged by water runoff or other environmental hazards like heavy rain, snow, wind, and other weather changes.

Restoring a headstone is also an effective form of maintenance because granite has porous properties which might cause the gloss to fade over time if not treated properly.

Sanding down headstones helps to remove any cracks or chips in the stone which could otherwise lead to water seeping through and causing serious damage over time!

Headstone maintenance has many benefits for both you as well as people visiting your loved one’s memorial site every day.

Compared to marble and other stone materials, granite is extremely durable and resistant to environmental wear. Granite is practically impermeable to hail, rain, lichen, and mold. To clean a granite headstone, you will want to use a mix of water and nonionic cleaner. The headstone may require seasonal maintenance and inspection to identify signs of stains, scratches, or etches on the surface.

how to clean headstones Slovenia

What is headstone cleaning?

The characteristic of Slovenian cemeteries is that they have very different sizes of burial spaces. We usually carry out classic cremation burials in a standard burial space. Traditional gravestones are divided into single and family ones.

A Single gravestone is usually 80 -120 cm wide, and 180 – 220 cm long, while family headstones are 120-300 cm wide and 180-300 cm long. Family headstones are usually made from ironstone and designated as “family headstones”.

The best protection for your loved one’s gravestone against deterioration is appropriate cleaning.

It is the process of removing dirt, dust, and debris from the grave site. One way to clean it is by digging around it and removing the debris manually. Using a garden hose will not be enough because it will not remove all the dirt and debris that accumulated on top of the headstone. However, if you want to do it manually you can use a brush or broom to sweep away any unwanted substances that may be on top of your loved one’s gravestone. Gravestones are subject to deterioration, this can make visiting them unpleasant.

What are the restrictions with the flowers and plants on the gravesite?

When our loved ones pass away and we must choose the best location for their burial, it can seem overwhelming. The dearly departed are buried in a place that is identified. That is why we tend not to limit the number of flowers and plants at the gravesite. We also prefer to bury our deceased close to their families and friends. All these restrictions need to be checked by the local cemetery, when we follow them, the flowers will add up to make the visit there easier for us.

What are the basic methods for headstone maintenance?

Having consistent maintenance to your headstone is not easy. It is advised to learn proper maintenance which can lead to a lasting memorial. Here are some of the common methods used in cleaning monuments;

Polished Granite

There are a variety of methods for maintaining polished granite. If a stain has occurred on the surface, use an appropriate cleaner to remove the stain. For general cleaning, use neutral soap and water or other non-abrasive cleaners. The surface should be dried with a clean cloth and then polished with an appropriate wax or polish. Petroleum-based products should be avoided because they can cause staining over time if they are rubbed into the granite’s surface too deeply, which will make them difficult to remove later on without damaging the stone’s finish.

For Marble

To maintain the gravestone for marble, you should clean it twice a year with a mild cleaner and water, and seal the stone’s surface annually to protect it from moisture. You can also wash away lichen or moss that grow on the headstone by hosing them down with water in five-minute periods every few weeks. If you notice any serious damage to your loved one’s grave, such as cracks or chips in the stone, then contact a professional.

These methods are suitable for light headstone maintenance; however, it would be more beneficial to work with experienced cleaners who are familiar with this field.
